Key Scripture:
“Like newborn babies crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it, you may grow up in your salvation” (1 Peter 2:2 NIV).
In the same way that a newborn baby needs to grow physically, so you too now must grow spiritually. Physically you may be 24 years old, but if you were born again one month ago then spiritually you are only one month old. The first thing that a baby needs to grow up with is milk. Without milk, a baby will starve to death.
The milk needed for spiritual babies is the Word of God. You may be asking, “Where do I start reading the Word?”
Here are a few steps that will help you.
Firstly, find yourself a version of the bible that is easy to read, like the NIV (New International) or NLT (New Living Translation).
Secondly, start by reading the specific scriptures in this manual under the ‘Further Bible Study’ sections. After that, begin by reading through the Gospels. Start with Matthew and read through to John. Do this a couple of times, and then carry on through the rest of the New Testament. Or if you want to read the Old Testament, begin with Psalms and Proverbs. It is important to keep reading the bible even if you feel you don’t understand everything. The reason for this is that the Word of God is feeding your spirit even if you do not understand what you are reading.
Avoid opening your Bible in random places every time you sit down to read. This can become discouraging and leave you feeling like you are not moving in a direction.
Topical Bible study is also a great place to start. If you want to know about the love of God, then look at the back of your concordance under the topic of love. There you will see all the scriptures that speak about love. it is also easy to use the internet to search key terms like: 'The Bible and God's love' or whichever theme you desire to know more about.
Just as a baby goes through different stages in development and growth, so you too will go through various steps in your spiritual growth. Don't get frustrated with yourself. You will grow as you learn to feed yourself on the Word and hang out with other family members who can teach you how to become a mature Christian.
