Key Scripture:
“Long, long ago He decided to adopt us into His family through Jesus Christ (what pleasure He took in planning this!)”
(Ephesians 1:5 MSG).
Think back to that courtroom scene where you were found guilty. God not only forgave you, but it was His great pleasure to bring you into His family! He adopted you as a son and a daughter and now calls you His own. This is more than incredible; our minds can’t even fully comprehend this love. To be called a son and daughter of the living God is the highest call that you can ever have. This is true redemption!
Paul describes our relationship with God as that of a Father with His children. When we receive Christ, we are adopted into God’s very own family. It says that God chose us and picked us out for Himself as His very own.
Adoption is a process whereby the adopted child becomes legally part of a family and takes on the surname of that family. This means that the child is also now a legal heir of the family. This is what happens to us. The moment we receive Jesus, those adoption papers are signed, and we have legally and formally been declared as a son or a daughter of God. We now share in all the privileges, position and inheritance of the King. We are heirs, together with Jesus, to everything that is our Father's.
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16 NKJV).
When we are born again, there is a witness in our spirits that we are His children (even if on some days you don’t feel like it). There is prompting in our hearts, an AFFIRMATION and a ‘knowing that you know’ that you are indeed a son and a daughter of God.
Through adoption, God changes our position from being orphans and slaves to being sons and daughters. Adoption is a 100% legitimate, legal and lawful contract signed by the blood of Jesus. It is a done deal! The enemy might still try to remind you of your slavery and your old identity, but it’s vital that you know that he has NO legal rights to your life anymore!
